Aluminum Oil Pans
The original oil pan is often made of thin sheet metal or plastic. On a tuned engine or on the track, it becomes the weak link.
What it provides
Three things. Strength first: an aluminium oil pan can withstand a stone or a kerb where sheet metal would be punctured. Cooling next: aluminium conducts heat and the fins dissipate it, which matters when the oil exceeds 120 °C. And often a larger capacity with baffles that prevent the oil from moving away from the pickup during long corners - the most common cause of engine failure on the track.
What to plan for
Removing the oil pan means a complete oil change and a new gasket, with cross-pattern torque tightening. Check the capacity: if the volume changes, the original dipstick will no longer give an accurate reading.
