Intake Manifolds
The intake manifold distributes air between the cylinders. Its geometry determines where the torque sits, and it is a fundamental modification - not an accessory.
What it changes
The air entering a cylinder is not stationary: it oscillates in the runner. Long runners favor filling at low revs, while short runners favor the top end of the rev range. A performance manifold therefore shifts the useful power band and increases the available flow when the engine demands a lot of it. On modern forced-induction engines, its main purpose is to remove a bottleneck when the target power is well above stock.
It can only be evaluated as part of a package
Fitted alone to an engine with the stock exhaust and tune, a short-runner manifold shifts the power band without adding anything - and can make the car less pleasant around town. Combined with a free-flowing exhaust and an ECU remap, it is one of the parts that genuinely changes the car's character.
What to plan for
Removing it opens up the engine: new gaskets are mandatory, and photograph the routing of the vacuum hoses before disassembly - this is the classic oversight, and it results in an unstable idle. An ECU remap is almost always necessary.
