What it changes - honestly

Its mesh lets more air through over the same surface area, so pressure loss is reduced. The power gain is modest and frankly barely noticeable on its own: anyone promising you ten horsepower from a filter is telling you a tall tale. The real benefit lies elsewhere - it can be cleaned and re-oiled instead of thrown away. Over a car's lifetime, it costs less than replacing a cartridge every two years, and it affects neither the noise, compliance, nor roadworthiness inspection.

The re-oiling trap

Too much oil migrates to the airflow meter, which starts giving false readings: jerking, an engine warning light, and increased fuel consumption. Apply a light coating of oil, let it drain, and clean the airflow meter with the dedicated product if the symptom appears. Never use gasoline or brake cleaner on the foam.

How often

Cleaning every 15,000 to 20,000 km is sufficient for road use, and considerably more often on the track or on dirt roads. A clogged filter chokes the engine exactly like the cartridge it replaces.
