Oil Coolers

Oil does more than lubricate: it carries away some of the heat. Above 130 °C, it loses its film strength and provides much less protection.

When it becomes necessary

On the road, rarely. As soon as you string together track laps, tow, or drive a remapped engine in the mountains in summer, the oil temperature rises and stays high. An oil cooler stabilizes it: it is a reliability component, not a power upgrade - nobody has ever gained horsepower from one, but many engines have been saved by one.

DSG gearbox kits

The same applies to the gearbox: a DSG that overheats switches to protection mode and starts slipping. A dedicated heat exchanger solves the problem, especially on a tuned car whose torque exceeds what the gearbox could handle from the factory.

During installation

Allow for a thermostat: without one, the oil takes forever to reach operating temperature in winter, causing more wear than oil that is too hot. Also check the level after the circuit has been filled for the first time.
