Shock Mounts & Bearings
The strut mount is the shock absorber's upper anchor point in the body. It bears the entire weight of the front of the car and allows the strut to pivot when you turn the steering wheel.
Symptoms
A sharp crack when turning while stationary, a knock over every bump, sometimes steering that remains slightly turned: the strut mount bearing has given up the ghost. On a lowered car, they wear out faster - the shock absorber operates over a shorter travel and bottoms out more often.
Competition strut mounts
Competition strut mounts replace the rubber with a bearing and a rigid connection: direct feedback, zero deformation, and often integrated camber adjustment. In return, everything the shock absorber absorbs is transmitted into the body.
The right approach
Replace the strut mounts at the same time as the shock absorbers: the strut is already removed, and fitting a new shock absorber onto a worn-out strut mount amounts to sacrificing it.
