What this part changes

A manifold gasket has been crushed once: it has conformed to the flange imperfections and lost its elasticity. When reinstalled, it whistles when cold, then lets gases through, which burn the sealing surface.

The gasket costs a few euros. A cylinder head's flatness costs much more.

What to plan for

  • Order with the part: manifold, downpipe or exhaust system.
  • Clean the sealing surface with a brass brush before reassembly, and tighten in a cross pattern to the specified torque.
