What this part changes

The turbo manifold supports the turbine and withstands temperatures of up to 900 °C: it is the most heavily stressed part of a turbocharged engine. A clear layout allows boost pressure to build earlier; a suitable flange lets you install a larger turbine than the original one and therefore target a different power level.

The choice of material matters just as much as the layout. Cast iron withstands heat cycles without cracking and dampens vibrations. Stainless steel is lighter and allows better layouts, but requires well-designed supports: a cantilevered turbine will eventually cause a weld to fail.

What to plan for

  • An external wastegate connection becomes necessary as soon as you significantly exceed the original boost pressure.
  • Support the turbine: provide a support bracket if the manifold does not have one.
  • High-temperature hardware and gaskets, tightened to the correct torque and rechecked after a few heat cycles.
