Both the thread and the seat must match. An M12x1.5 cannot be fitted to an M12x1.25 hub, and a conical seat cannot be tightened in a ball-seat socket: the lug nut will then only make contact along an edge, causing the wheel to loosen while driving.
Keep the key in the car, not in the garage. Without it, no wheel can be removed, including on the side of the road. Also note the engraved number: it can be used to order a replacement.
