The mount is the shock absorber's upper anchor point: it supports the weight at the front and allows the strut to pivot when steering. A sharp creaking noise when steering while stationary is caused by its bearing.

Competition versions replace the rubber with a bearing and a rigid connection: direct feedback, zero deformation, sometimes integrated camber adjustment - and everything the shock absorber absorbs is transferred into the body.

What to plan for

Change them at the same time as the shock absorbers: the strut is already removed.
On a lowered car, they wear out faster - the shock absorber reaches the bump stop more often.
