What this part changes
A complete exhaust system replaces everything downstream of the catalytic converter. Its main effect is sound: less-restricted silencers, a deeper tone and a more noticeable rise in revs to the ear. In terms of power, the gain exists but remains modest on a stock engine, because the restriction in a standard engine is mainly upstream - the catalytic converter and downpipe.
The second effect, less often mentioned but more lasting: weight and durability. A stainless steel exhaust system does not rust, can still be removed in ten years and weighs less than an original aluminized-steel exhaust. On a car you intend to keep, it is the part you only install once.
What to plan for
- Plan for new gaskets and clamps: the original ones cannot be tightened twice.
- Worn rubber exhaust mounts allow the system to touch the floor and transmit vibrations into the cabin.
- A section that is much larger than stock reduces low-end torque: stay close to the stock size on an unmodified engine.
