What this part changes

A manifold gasket that has been compressed once has conformed to the imperfections in the flange and lost its elasticity. Once refitted, it whistles when cold, then lets gases through, which burn the sealing surface.

The gasket costs a few euros. A cylinder head's flatness costs much more.

What to plan for

  • Order with the part: manifold, downpipe or exhaust system.
  • Clean the sealing surface with a brass brush before refitting, and tighten in a criss-cross pattern to the specified torque.
