What this part changes

A direct intake kit replaces the airbox with a short pipe and a conical filter. Two things change: airflow, because the airbox baffles are removed, and intake noise, which becomes pronounced and very noticeable under load - this is often the real reason for buying one.

Any performance gain depends on air temperature. A filter sitting in the engine bay draws in air at 60°C or more: it is less dense and gives back what it had gained. Proper kits come with a heat shield and a cold-air intake; without one or the other, the gain is theoretical. Carbon conducts significantly less heat than aluminium.

What to plan for

  • Isolate the filter from engine heat: use a heat shield and cold-air intake, otherwise the kit is purely decorative.
  • Check the mass airflow sensor connection: the diameter must match to avoid hesitation.
  • Reconnect the crankcase ventilation hoses left by the original airbox.
