What this part changes

A sport disc is judged by its ability to dissipate heat, not by its appearance. Grooves and drilled holes remove the gases and dust that build up between the disc and the pad: braking bite remains sharp from one stop to the next, whereas a solid disc starts to feel spongy.

On a road car, the benefit is most noticeable on a mountain descent or track day - exactly where tired brakes become frightening.

What to plan for

  • Discs and pads must be replaced per axle, never on just one side.
  • Bedding-in: perform around ten progressive stops without coming to a complete halt before driving hard; otherwise the pad may bed in unevenly and warp the disc.
  • Check that the ABS ring is supplied or can be transferred when the disc carries it.
