What this part changes

The rear muffler determines the sound and the design of the outlet. It offers the best balance between what you spend and what you hear: with the same diameter, the body volume and baffle type determine whether you get a deep tone or an unpleasant resonance at 2,500 rpm on the highway.

Keeping an intermediate muffler effectively eliminates that resonance. Removing it makes the car louder everywhere, including where you did not want it to be - this is the most common regret after an exhaust upgrade.

What to plan for

  • Check the bumper cutout for a dual or duplex outlet: an off-center outlet is immediately noticeable.
  • Keep an intermediate muffler if the car is driven on the highway.
  • New gaskets and clamps, plus inspection of the rubber mounts.
