What this part changes

The turbo manifold supports the turbocharger and withstands temperatures of up to 900 °C: it is the most heavily stressed part of a turbocharged engine. A free-flowing design builds boost earlier; a suitable flange allows you to fit a larger turbocharger than the original, and therefore target a different power level.

The choice of material matters just as much as the design. Cast iron withstands heat cycles without cracking and dampens vibrations. Stainless steel is lighter and allows for better designs, but requires well-designed supports: a cantilevered turbocharger will eventually crack a weld.

What to plan for

  • An external wastegate connection becomes necessary as soon as you significantly exceed the original boost pressure.
  • Support the turbocharger: provide a support bracket if the manifold does not have one.
  • High-temperature hardware and gaskets, tightened to the correct torque and rechecked after a few heat cycles.
