Strut Braces
The strut brace connects the two shock absorber mounts above the engine. It prevents the suspension towers from moving away from each other when the car is loaded up.
What it changes
A chassis flexes, even when new: in a hard corner, the loaded strut tower pushes outward and the geometry deteriorates at precisely the moment you need it. A rigid brace distributes the load between both sides: the front end feels more precise on turn-in, and the car maintains the same response from one corner to the next. This is especially true for older chassis, convertibles and high-mileage cars.
Aluminium or steel
Aluminium is lightweight and looks good under the bonnet; steel is stiffer at the same cross-section and handles heavy loads better. For road use, aluminium is more than sufficient; for track use, steel is the more consistent choice.
Before ordering
Check the clearance under the bonnet: engine covers, hoses and the air filter housing do not always accommodate the brace. And a brace should only be installed on sound mounts - otherwise you are stiffening between two points that move.
