What this part changes

Above 130 °C, oil loses its film strength and provides much less protection. On the road, this almost never happens; during consecutive track laps, while towing, or with a remapped engine in summer, the temperature rises and stays high.

An oil cooler stabilizes it. This is a reliability part, not a power upgrade: nobody has gained horsepower from one, but many engines have been saved by one. The same logic applies to the DSG gearbox, which switches to protection mode when it overheats.

What to plan for

  • Plan for a thermostat: without one, the oil takes forever to warm up in winter, causing more wear than oil that is too hot.
  • Check the level after the first fill of the oil circuit.
