What this part changes

The tie rod end connects the steering rack to the wheel. It either has play or it does not; there is no acceptable in-between: a worn tie rod end causes vague steering around the centre position, and the car follows road ruts.

Adjustable or uniball versions serve a different purpose: correcting the geometry of a very lowered car, where the steering bar operates at an angle that causes the wheels to steer over bumps.

What to plan for

  • Safety-critical part: replace it at the slightest sign of play.
  • Wheel alignment required, and recheck the locknuts after a few hundred kilometres.
