What this part changes

The ball joint links the steering rack to the wheel. It either has play or it does not - there is no acceptable middle ground: a worn ball joint makes the steering feel vague around the center position, and the car follows the road grooves.

Adjustable or uniball versions serve a different purpose: correcting the geometry of a heavily lowered car, where the steering tie rod operates at an angle that causes the wheels to steer when going over bumps.

What to plan for

Safety-critical part: replace it at the slightest sign of play.
Wheel alignment mandatory, and recheck the locknuts after a few hundred kilometers.
