What this part changes

The tie rod end connects the steering rack to the wheel. It either has play or it does not; there is no acceptable middle ground: a worn tie rod end causes vague steering around the center position, and the car follows road grooves.

Adjustable or uniball versions serve a different purpose: correcting the alignment of a very lowered car, where the steering rod operates at an angle that causes the wheels to turn over bumps.

What to plan for

  • Safety-critical part: replace it at the slightest sign of play.
  • Wheel alignment required, and recheck the locknuts after a few hundred kilometers.
