The intake is the pump's suction side, and it is often the least carefully considered part of a build. We spend money on the outlet and forget the inlet - even though an engine can only burn the air we let in.
Three levels, three budgets
The performance air filter replaces the cartridge in the original airbox: no risk, no tuning, and it can be cleaned instead of thrown away. The cold air intake kit removes the airbox - more airflow and a clear intake sound, but it must be isolated from engine heat. The intake manifold changes the length of the runners and shifts the power band: it is a fundamental modification that should be considered alongside the camshaft and exhaust.
The hot-air trap
This is the point that determines everything. Hot air is less dense: at the same volume, it contains less oxygen, and therefore produces less power. A cone filter installed right in the engine bay draws in air at 60 °C or more and gives back what it had just gained. A heat shield and a cold-air intake are not accessories: they make the difference between a real gain and mere noise.
And the mass airflow sensor
On modern engines, the ECU meters fuel based on what the mass airflow sensor tells it. An over-oiled filter clogs it, causing it to give false readings, followed by jerking, the check-engine light, and excessive fuel consumption. Use only a light coating of oil, and let it drain - this is the most common fault after fitting a performance intake, and the easiest to avoid.
