Direct Intake Kits
A direct intake kit removes the original airbox in favor of a short pipe and a cone filter.
What it changes
Two things. Airflow, because removing the original airbox also removes the baffles it uses to reduce noise. And intake noise, of course: clear and very noticeable under load, with the turbo whistle no longer muffled. Let’s be honest - that’s often the real reason for buying one, and it’s a good reason.
It all comes down to temperature
A filter installed in the middle of the engine bay draws in air at 60 °C or more. This air is less dense and contains less oxygen, so it gives back what the increased airflow had gained. Serious kits come with a heat shield and a cold-air intake; without one or the other, the gain is theoretical. This is also why carbon fiber makes sense: it conducts significantly less heat than aluminum, in addition to being lighter and offering a distinctive design.
What to plan for
Check the mass airflow sensor connection diameter: if it doesn’t match, the ECU meters fuel incorrectly and the car jerks. Also remember to reconnect the crankcase ventilation hoses that were attached to the original airbox - if left disconnected, they spray oil everywhere and trigger a warning light.
