How to Lower a VW Transporter T4 — Complete Guide
How to lower a

Front torsion bars, rear springs — the complete guide to lowering your T4 properly

The T4, a suspension all on its own
The Volkswagen Transporter T4 (1990–2003) is one of the most popular platforms in the VW scene — but lowering it requires a different approach than classic vans. Unlike a Golf or a T5, there are no springs at the front: the T4 uses torsion bars.
At the rear, however, there are traditional coil springs. Lowering the T4 is therefore managed differently depending on the axle, and that’s exactly what this guide explains to you.
🔩 Front — Torsion Bar Adjustment
On the T4, the role of traditional springs is taken by longitudinal torsion bars. These are steel bars that twist on themselves to absorb shocks; the more tension they have, the higher the body.
By adjusting the tension of these bars via two adjustment nuts, you directly change the front ride height. No need to remove the shock absorbers or change the springs.
Locate the adjustment nuts
Raise the vehicle on jack stands and look for the two 27 mm nuts located under the floor, at the level of the fuel tank, much further back than often imagined. Access is from the side of the vehicle.

Adjustment Direction
The principle is simple:
▸ Nut moving up toward the floor → raising ground clearance
▸ Nut moving down from the floor → lowering ground clearance
Proceed in small increments and regularly check the height by placing the vehicle on the ground between each adjustment.
Depending on the vehicle's age, mileage, and overall condition, the threads may be heavily rusted and covered with road grime. Before working:
▸ Carefully clean with a wire brush
▸ Apply a penetrating oil (like WD-40) and let it sit for several minutes
▸ If the nut is stuck, a slight heat application can help; never force it abruptly
▸ As a last resort, new nuts are available at VW dealerships
🔧 The Rear: Springs and Height Shims
Spring Replacement
The only way to lower the rear of the T4 is to replace the original springs with short springs (sport or lowering springs). Replacement is relatively simple but requires disassembling the entire rear suspension.
💡 Always coordinate rear lowering with front torsion bar adjustment for a balanced result and even stance.
Height shims
To correct or increase rear height, adjustment shims can be added in addition to or replacing the original rubber shims (available in several heights). This is the simplest solution if you already have short springs.
💡 Original shims come in several heights from VW.
📐 After Lowering — Key Points
Mandatory after any lowering. Geometry changes with height; without adjustment, tires wear unevenly and road handling deteriorates.
Work on a flat surface and adjust both sides identically. Let the vehicle roll a few hundred meters before taking the final measurement, as the suspension settles slightly.
Significant lowering can affect the rear brake proportioning valve, which is sensitive to load. Check braking behavior after installation.
