Different Types of Hoses: Complete Guide
Which Hose Size Should You Choose
for your Air Ride Kit?
1/4″, 3/8″, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm... the complete guide to equipping your air suspension system without making a mistake

Why Hose Size Changes Everything
When it comes to equipping your air suspension system, you immediately think of the air springs, compressor, or tank. Yet a detail as subtle as your hose diameter has a direct impact on your air ride kit's performance. Choosing 1/4" (approximately 6.35mm) or 3/8" (approximately 9.52mm) may seem insignificant, but each diameter has its advantages and limitations depending on how you plan to use it.
On paper, all hoses do the same job: transporting air between your tank, compressor, and air springs. In practice, the diameter you choose determines how quickly your system responds, how much space it takes up underneath the vehicle, and even compatibility with certain parts and fittings on the market. Here's everything you need to know before placing your order.
🌍 The 3 most common standards
1/4" hoses
US Standard (6.35mm)
Simple, fast installation and easy handling, ideal for tight spaces. This is the American standard, widely used in Air Lift kits.
Less responsive, with slower height changes than with a larger diameter.
6mm hoses
European Standard
Simple, fast installation and easy handling, ideal for tight spaces. Standard for European air suspension kits.
Less responsive than larger hoses.
3/8" hoses
US Premium Version (9.52mm)
Faster response, easier frequent adjustments, optimal performance. Very common with Air Lift Performance and other high-end US brands.
Bulkier installation, requiring more space underneath the vehicle.
| Size | Exact Diameter | Main Use |
|---|---|---|
| 1/8" | 3.17 mm | Specific Applications |
| 1/4" | 6.35 mm | US Standard / Air Lift |
| 6mm | 6 mm | European Standard |
| 8mm | 8 mm | Airmext / Intermediate Kit |
| 3/8" | 9.52 mm | US Premium Version |
| 10mm | 10 mm | Hard-Line Standard |
| 15mm | 15 mm | Hard-Line (rare) |
| 1/2" | 12.7 mm | Industrial applications |
⚙️ The 8 mm compromise
Between 1/4" and 3/8", there is an intermediate size found mainly on Airmext kits: 8 mm. It is an option we often recommend to enthusiasts who want a genuine performance boost without immediately switching to premium air hose.
▸ Greater airflow than 1/4" without the bulk of 3/8"
▸ Significantly improved responsiveness when changing ride height
▸ Good compatibility with most push-to-connect fittings on the market
▸ An excellent balance of performance and ease of installation
🔩 Hard-Line Installation
If you are planning a Hard-Line installation, most of the lines used are 10 mm, with a few rare 15 mm setups. It is the choice of enthusiasts who want a clean, durable, and truly attractive finish for their air suspension system.
▸ Choose compression fittings for better long-term sealing
▸ Plan for a professional installation: it is more technical than a conventional flexible-line setup
▸ Rigid lines offer much better resistance to vibrations
▸ It is also the cleanest-looking solution for a well-finished system
✂️ How to cut your air hose cleanly
Once you have chosen the right size for your kit, you still need to cut your air hose correctly. This is the most underestimated step of an air ride installation, yet it directly determines how airtight your system will be. Nothing is more frustrating than spending several hours installing a brand-new air ride kit, only to discover a leak when pressurizing it.
The push-to-connect fittings used on nearly all air suspension kits create an airtight seal with an O-ring that presses against the tube. If your cut is uneven, angled, or crushed, the O-ring can no longer create a perfect seal, resulting in a slow air leak that causes pressure loss and prevents your system from maintaining ride height.
Absolutely avoid: wire cutters or scissors, which crush and deform the tube instead of cutting it cleanly.
📋 Which size should you choose based on your profile?
Easy installation, affordable price, perfect for occasional use and tight spaces.
The best performance-to-price ratio for regular use, with a real boost in responsiveness.
Maximum performance, frequent adjustments, Hard-Line installation for intensive use.
Whatever size you choose, a clean cut and a fitting pushed in properly are non-negotiable.
❓ The questions we get asked most often
Technically, yes, provided you use the right transition fittings, but this isn't recommended. A consistent system, with a single diameter from the compressor to the air bags, ensures stable pressure and avoids unnecessary pressure losses. If you change just one component, remember to check its compatibility with the rest of your kit before ordering.
Yes, and it's often underestimated. Switching from 1/4" to 8mm or 3/8" reduces the filling and draining time of your air bags, so your kit responds more quickly to height adjustments. On an Air Lift Performance kit equipped with a dual compressor, the difference is especially noticeable during intensive use or frequent adjustments at events.
It's not mandatory, but highly recommended. A dedicated hose cutter costs very little and prevents you from making a poor cut—the most important cut in your entire installation. It's a small investment that protects all the components in your kit and saves you from having to dismantle everything in the event of a leak.
