Exhaust Gaskets
The Right Gasket Means the Right Flange
Manifold, turbo inlet and outlet, wastegate, downpipe, and exhaust system gaskets: an exhaust gasket should be selected based on the flange shape — number of holes, bolt spacing, and port diameter — not just the tube diameter. Two 76 mm flanges may be incompatible.
Multi-Layer, Copper, or Graphite
Multi-layer steel (MLS) gaskets withstand the highest temperatures and should be installed dry on clean, flat surfaces. Copper crushes and compensates for a slightly marked surface. Reinforced graphite is suitable for exhaust system flanges, which are subject to less stress.
A Gasket Must Not Be Reused
A removed exhaust gasket has taken the shape of its flanges; when reinstalled, it will leak. Plan to fit a new gasket every time you remove the turbo or manifold, and retighten the fasteners after a few heat cycles.
