Downpipes
The downpipe is the tube that descends from the turbocharger. It is the most restrictive point in the entire exhaust system, and therefore the one where a gain is really noticeable.
What it changes
The turbine has to push the exhaust gases through a narrowed section and, often, a catalytic converter. Enlarging it frees up the turbine, allowing it to build boost earlier and more decisively. Behind the wheel, the first noticeable change is the response: the turbo takes less time to spool and the pull lasts higher up the rev range. It is the most cost-effective exhaust modification on a turbocharged engine - and the one that allows a remap to deliver what it promises.
With or without a catalytic converter
A downpipe with a catalytic converter retains emissions control and remains suitable for everyday use, including vehicle inspections. Without a catalytic converter, back pressure drops further, but the car is no longer compliant and the engine warning light comes on if nothing is done electronically. Versions with a DPF are available for diesel engines: they retain the particulate filter.
Remapping is not optional
A downpipe changes what the sensors read. Without adapting the mapping, the ECU compensates, the gain disappears and the engine may enter limp mode. Factor it into your budget: it is indicated on the relevant product pages.
Before ordering
Check the number of sensor ports required by your engine - single or twin, as specified in the technical details for each product page. Removal often requires access from underneath and removing an engine mount: plan to use a lift or axle stands, and fit new gaskets.
