What this part changes
The downpipe is the pipe that runs down from the turbo. This is where back pressure builds up: the turbine has to push the exhaust gases through a restricted section and often a catalytic converter. Enlarging it frees up the turbine, allowing it to build boost earlier and more decisively - it is the exhaust modification you feel most on a turbocharged engine.
What changes behind the wheel is the response. The turbo takes less time to spool and the power continues higher up the rev range. On a remapped engine, this is the part that allows the ECU to deliver what the tune promises; without remapping, the ECU compensates and much of the potential gain remains unused.
What to plan for
- ECU remapping: essential to make use of the gain and avoid limp mode.
- Without a catalytic converter, the car is no longer road legal and the engine warning light will come on if nothing is done electronically.
- Check the sensor port: single or dual depending on the engine, as indicated in the technical details of the listing.
- Removal often requires access from underneath and removing an engine mount: plan for a lift or axle stands.
