Exhaust Manifolds
On a naturally aspirated engine, the manifold is the exhaust component that most changes its character - and the only one that works through pressure waves, not just flow.
What it changes
Each cylinder that empties sends a wave into the manifold. With equal-length tubes and an unobstructed layout, these waves work together instead of interfering with one another: the vacuum that follows the passage of the gases helps the next cylinder empty, and even fill more effectively. Volumetric efficiency improves, along with torque over a given rpm range. The original cast-iron manifold, on the other hand, is designed to cost little and retain heat.
4-2-1 or 4-1: where do you want your torque?
A 4-2-1 pairs the tubes before bringing them all together: it raises mid-range torque, making it the choice for a car driven on the road. A 4-1 brings everything together at the same point: it shifts power higher up the rev range and weakens the low end - a setup that only makes sense with a matching camshaft and exhaust system.
What to plan for
New gaskets and studs in good condition: one stud out of two breaks during removal, so get the kit and an extractor. Also check the lambda sensor location - the length changes, so the sensor bung must be present - as well as the steering column clearance on 4-1 layouts.
