Hoods, Grilles & Air Intakes
The hood is the most useful body panel to lighten: it is high and far-forward weight, exactly where it has the greatest effect on handling.
Real weight reduction
An original steel hood weighs 15 to 20 kg depending on the model. In fiberglass, expect 6 to 8 kg; in carbon fiber, 4 to 6 kg. Removing around ten kilograms ahead of the front axle, on a 1,200 kg car, can be felt when turn-in begins.
The vents are not decorative
The vents and air intakes in an aftermarket hood let hot air escape from the engine bay, where it would otherwise build up against the windshield. This is useful on a modified engine - and it is also an entry point for water: check what is underneath before driving in the rain.
Mandatory fasteners
A lightweight hood no longer has the weight that kept it closed. Hood pins are not a styling accessory: without them, the low pressure at high speed can open the hood. Plan for them when ordering; they are never included.
