The bodywork is the only modification you see before you hear the engine. It is also the one that requires the most preparation: an aftermarket body part is not an original part; it arrives unfinished and needs to be worked on.
Three materials, three uses
Fiberglass (FRP) is the most common: lightweight, inexpensive, and repairable, but it breaks cleanly on impact and almost always needs fitting. Polyurethane absorbs impacts and returns to its original shape - it is the choice for a car driven every day. Carbon fiber is the lightest and most expensive, and is typically clear-coated rather than painted.
Factor paint into the budget
These parts arrive in gelcoat or primer, never painted. Allow for sanding, high-build primer, color matching, and clear coat - often a third of the part's price. A body shop will tell you before starting: test-fitting before painting avoids having to repaint twice.
And the fitment
The panel gaps of an aftermarket part are not the same as those of an original part. Redrilling holes, trimming brackets, adding bushings: this is normal for this type of part and should be allowed for in workshop time.
