What this part changes
The downpipe is the pipe that runs down from the turbocharger. This is where back pressure builds up: the turbine has to expel the gases through a restricted section and often a catalytic converter. Enlarging it frees up the turbine, allowing it to build boost earlier and more decisively - it is the exhaust modification you feel most on a turbocharged engine.
What changes behind the wheel is the response. The turbo takes less time to spool up, and the power continues higher in the rev range. On a remapped engine, this is the part that allows the ECU to deliver what it promises; without remapping, the ECU compensates and much of the potential gain remains untapped.
What to plan for
- ECU remapping: essential to make the most of the gain and prevent the car from entering limp mode.
- Without a catalytic converter, the car is no longer road-legal and the engine warning light will come on if no electronic adjustment is made.
- Check the oxygen sensor port: single or dual depending on the engine, as specified in the product listing's technical details.
- Removal often requires access from underneath and removal of an engine mount: plan to use a lift or axle stands.
