The spring perch is the upper anchor point of the shock absorber: it supports the weight at the front and allows the strut to pivot when steering. A sharp crunching noise when steering while stationary is caused by its bearing.

Competition versions eliminate the rubber in favor of a bearing and a rigid connection: direct feedback, zero deformation, and sometimes integrated camber adjustment - along with everything the shock absorber absorbs being transmitted into the body.
