The spring seat is the upper anchor point of the shock absorber: it supports the weight at the front and allows the strut to pivot when steering. A sharp cracking noise when steering while stationary usually comes from its bearing.

Competition versions replace the rubber with a bearing and a rigid connection: direct feedback, zero deformation, and sometimes integrated camber adjustment - but everything the shock absorber absorbs is transmitted into the body.
