What this part changes
A direct intake kit removes the airbox in favor of a short intake pipe and a cone filter. Two things change: airflow, because the airbox baffles are removed, and the intake sound, which is clear and very noticeable under load - often the real reason for buying one.
All the gains depend on air temperature. A filter installed in the engine bay draws in air at 60 °C or more: it is less dense and cancels out the gains it was meant to provide. Serious kits come with a heat shield and a cold-air intake; without one or the other, the gain is theoretical. Carbon conducts significantly less heat than aluminium.
What to plan for
- Insulate the filter from engine heat: use a heat shield and cold-air intake, otherwise the kit is merely decorative.
- Check the mass airflow sensor connection: the diameter must match to avoid hesitation.
- Reconnect the crankcase ventilation hoses left by the original airbox.
