Brake fluid is hygroscopic: it absorbs moisture from the air. Once opened, a container loses its properties within a few months, and water in the system causes the fluid to boil under pressure, resulting in the pedal going to the floor. Use a new container and bleed the entire system.
Do not mix fluid types: silicone-based DOT 5 is not compatible with glycol-based DOT 4 or DOT 5.1.
