What this part changes

A manifold gasket has been compressed once: it has conformed to the flange's imperfections and lost its elasticity. Once reinstalled, it whistles when cold, then allows gases to pass through and burn the sealing surface.

The gasket costs a few euros. A cylinder head's flatness costs much more.

What to plan for

  • Order with the part: manifold, downpipe or exhaust system.
  • Clean the sealing surface with a brass brush before reassembly, and tighten in a crisscross pattern to the specified torque.
