What this part changes

A direct intake kit replaces the airbox with a short pipe and a conical filter. Two things change: airflow, because the airbox restrictions are removed, and intake noise, which becomes clear and very noticeable under load - this is often the real reason for buying one.

All the performance benefit depends on air temperature. A filter installed in the open engine bay draws in air at 60 °C or more: it is less dense and gives back what it had just gained. Serious kits come with a heat shield and a cold-air intake; without one or the other, the gain is theoretical. Carbon conducts significantly less heat than aluminium.

What to plan for

Insulate the filter from engine heat: use a heat shield and cold-air intake, otherwise the kit is purely decorative.
Check the mass airflow sensor connection: the diameter must match to prevent hesitation.
Reconnect the crankcase ventilation hoses connected to the original airbox.
