The spring seat is the shock absorber's upper anchor point: it supports the weight at the front and allows the strut to pivot when steering. A sharp cracking sound when steering while stationary comes from its bearing.

Competition versions replace the rubber with a bearing and a rigid connection: direct feedback, zero deformation, and sometimes integrated camber adjustment - plus everything the shock absorber takes is transferred into the body.
