Air-to-Air Intercoolers
The intercooler cools the compressed air from the turbo before it enters the engine. The colder this air is, the denser it is, and the more oxygen it contains at the same volume.
What it changes
The gain is not so much in peak power as in consistency. A standard intercooler handles one acceleration very well; it becomes saturated on the second lap of a circuit or the third full-throttle run. Intake temperature rises, the ECU retards the ignition to prevent knock, and power disappears - exactly when you need it. A properly sized intercooler keeps the temperature stable, and therefore keeps the power stable.
The bigger-is-better reflex, and why it backfires
A large intercooler cools better but adds volume to fill between the turbo and the engine: pressure takes longer to build, and the response becomes duller. On a road car, a properly sized intercooler with good airflow is better than a monster that creates turbo lag.
Vehicle-specific or universal
A vehicle-specific model uses the original mounting points and diameters: installation without cutting or custom piping. A universal model is selected by its core dimensions and number of rows, and requires suitable piping. In both cases, make sure you do not block the engine radiator: an intercooler mounted directly in front of it reduces its airflow.
